Repairing your property: a right in Europe?

A right to repair in Europe?

The ‘right to repair’ directive has been definitively adopted by the Council. The rules clarify the obligations of manufacturers with regard to the repair of goods and encourage consumers to extend the life cycle of products through repair.
The directive gives consumers the right to demand the repair of products that are technically repairable according to a list of predefined products (e.g. washing machines or mobile phones).

Manufacturers will have to repair products at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time after the legal warranty period.

Manufacturers are obliged to inform consumers about the products they are legally obliged to repair. A standardised European information form will be introduced, providing information on repair conditions and prices.

A European online platform will be set up to enable consumers to find repairers in their region and make it easier for them to find a repair workshop.

Member States will have 24 months to transpose the rules into national law.
